What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a study within the specialty of dentistry that pertains to the diagnosis and treatment, as well as the prevention, of gum disease.  Another name for gum disease is periodontal disease. At Sachar Dental NYC, we have an experienced periodontal specialist on our team, and in our office.  Our periodontal specialist has completed advanced training in the treatment of periodontal disease.

What is a periodontist?

At Sachar Dental NYC , we have a periodontist specialist on staff and in our office.   A periodontist is a specialized dentist that has completed advanced training in periodontics.  A periodontist completes three additional years of specialized training in periodontology after dental school.

Periodontists specialize in treating the soft tissues of the mouth and the jawbone that support the teeth.  They are also specialists in gum surgery and dental implants.  Their focus is on preventing gum disease, treating gum disease, treating bone loss, and treating lost teeth.

What is periodontal disease (aka gum disease)?

Periodontal disease is also called gum disease.  Gum disease is a progressive disease starting with mild inflammation of the gums and worsens to eventually result in bone loss and in tooth loss.  It is often caused by bacteria and plaque that occur in, and around, the teeth and gums.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by bacteria and plaque that accumulate in and around the teeth and gums.   The accumulation of plaque and tartar act as a medium for bacteria and results in the accumulation of bacteria on and around the teeth and gums.  Bacteria that accumulates around the teeth and gums,  release enzymes and acid that slowly destroy the gums, and the jawbone where the teeth attach.  When there is bone loss, eventually there may be tooth loss as well.

What are the signs and symptoms of gum disease?

Pain is rarely present in gum disease.  It is sometimes asymptomatic, however, it may include the following list of possible symptoms:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Sore gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Gum recession (shrinking gums with increased tooth root exposure)
  • Bad breath
  • Swollen gums
  • Change in the tooth alignment

How can I prevent gum disease?

Gum disease can be easily prevented with proper oral care at home, such as brushing and flossingProfessional dental cleanings twice (or more times) per year are also very important to prevent gum disease.

How is a gum disease diagnosed?

The diagnosis of gum disease is made through clinical examination and x-rays.  It is important to have a professional dental cleaning as well as a checkup at least twice per year.  When caught early, gum disease is much more treatable than in the advanced stages.

How is gum disease treated?

In the very early stages of gum disease, treatment may entail a professional dental cleaning in order to remove all the plaque, tartar and bacteria from around the teeth and gums.  In slightly more advanced cases of gum disease, a deep cleaning may be recommended for the treatment.  A deep cleaning is similar to a regular professional dental cleaning, however, it utilizes anesthesia that allows us to get deeper within the gums and teeth.  After a deep cleaning, we usually recommend having a regular professional dental cleanings four times per year.

In more advanced stages of gum disease, treatment usually involves periodontal surgery.  The goal of periodontal surgery is to reach deeper to remove bacteria between the gums, bone and teeth in order to restore healthy gums.

Why are we the best dentists in NYC for periodontal disease?

At Sachar Dental NYC, our periodontal specialist also adheres to our philosophy of performing the least invasive, and the most conservative treatment options available.  We do not rush into periodontal surgery, unless in cases where it is absolutely necessary.  We strongly believe that prevention is better than cure.  We emphasize in keeping to a strict and regular schedule of professional dental cleanings in order to prevent periodontal disease.  When periodontal disease occurs in the early stages, we advocate catching it as soon as possible and treating it before it becomes more advanced.  Our dental hygienists have advanced training and understanding of periodontal disease and its prevention.  They are experts in performing regular dental cleanings in order to prevent periodontal disease before it starts.
