At Sachar Dental NYC, general dentistry is the backbone of our practice. While we have multiple specialties and do extensive cosmetic dentistry procedures, general dentistry is most common thing we do. The practice of general dentistry allows us to restore teeth to their normal state after we identify the underlying pathologies. Our goal is always to restore normal function, appearance and shape of the teeth by sticking to our philosophy of always using the least invasive procedures, the most conservative approach, and the least toxic materials.
The first step in treating any dental pathology, is to identify the cause of the problem. This is done on a visit where you come in with complaints of dental problems, or when we identify a problem during a normal six-month checkup, or identify a problem that is not apparent clinically using x-rays.
Problems that we treat.
In no specific order, problems that we treat include (but not limited to):
What is restorative dentistry?
General dentistry that involves the correction of most of the above problems is referred to as “restorative dentistry”. General dentistry starts with preventative care in order to avoid the need for invasive procedures. It is very important to come in twice per year for your dental checkup examination, and your dental cleanings. Dental cleanings can help to avoid most of the listed problems. Having a checkup twice per year allows us to catch problems early, before more invasive procedures become necessary.
Forming the proper dental diagnosis.
The first step in general dentistry problems is the diagnosis of what is causing the problem and the underlying pathology. The doctors at Sachar Dental NYC have many years of experience of working in the country’s largest city. With the number of patients that we have seen, we have seen and diagnosed almost all types of pathologies. Additionally, our doctors have extensive training in school, residency and postgraduate training, and we continue to do continuing dental medical education every year. Our doctors have completed extensive training In advanced dental education at the renowned Spear Dental Education in Scottsdale, Arizona. Spear training focuses on teaching how to identify the most complex diagnoses and perform the most advanced treatments in dentistry. Our doctors are extremely competent and skilled in the diagnosis of the most difficult to identify pathologies.
When we do identify problems in our patients, we are experts in solving these problems using the least invasive procedures, the most conservative approaches, and the least toxic materials possible.
Dental procedures that we perform.
The following is a list of many of the general dentistry procedures and treatments that we perform at Sachar Dental NYC, but is not entirely inclusive.
When people come in with toothaches or pain, our first goal is to figure out what is causing the pain. This is done through listening to our patients’ subjective history and performing our extensive clinical examination and by taking x-rays. There are many causes of tooth pain that we identify and treat.
When we identify cavities and tooth decay, we perform fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays in order to restore the shape, appearance and function of the teeth.
When tooth decay has become more extensive such that the deficit is too large to be filled, sometimes we need to remove a bigger portion of the tooth and replace it with a porcelain crown. This restores the function of the biting surface.
If tooth decay becomes even more extensive and invasive, we may need to perform a tooth extraction if we cannot save the tooth. If is the case, we will then place a dental implant to replace the tooth. Some patients opt to have a denture or bridge instead of a dental implant. There are many different types of dentures and bridges that we fabricate and install.
We also fabricate mouth guards for many patients. Mouth guards are used for patients that are clenching grinding, as well as patients with TMJ pain. We also fabricate custom sports and athletic mouth guards.
When tooth decay and infection get deeper into the root of the tooth, they may kill the nerve within the root. For these patients, we perform root canals procedures followed by porcelain crowns after the root canal. Occasionally also we perform root canal retreatment for failed root canals that have been previously performed.
When patients complain of pain in their wisdom teeth, we perform simple wisdom tooth extractions. Prior to performing wisdom tooth extraction, we evaluate the complexity of the situation. For the more complex cases, we referred these patients out to our trusted network of oral surgeons.
For patients that comes to us with broken teeth, we always first try the least invasive procedures including bonding, inlay and onlay. For more severe broken teeth, we cap the tooth with a porcelain crown. As always, we always use the least invasive and most conservative procedures in order to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible.
Sometimes patients come into our office with the complaint of loose or lost fillings, dental crowns, or dental implants. For these patients, we first decide on the most appropriate and least invasive treatment options. When possible, we preserve the existing restoration, and if that is not possible, we then replace it. As with all of our treatments, we inform our patients extensively about the details and allow them to make informed decisions along with our guidance on their choice of treatment options.
For patients with complaint of bleeding gums, we identify why the gums are inflamed. Inflammation of the gums is called gingivitis, and is the root of periodontal disease. For these patients, we often recommend a deep cleaning if a regular dental cleaning does not resolve the problem. We also occasionally inject antibiotics into the gum pockets.
We often treat patients with a complaint of bad breath. Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria that breakdown food particles and plaque that remains between the teeth, and under the gums. Usually, a routine dental cleaning, or sometimes a deep cleaning will resolve this.
When patients come in with a complaint of loose teeth, we always try to save as many teeth as possible. This is done with performing deep cleanings and periodontal surgery. When a tooth cannot be saved, it is extracted and replaced with an implant.
For patients that complain of missing teeth, we can replace the tooth with a bridge, denture or implant.
For patients with a complaint of crooked or crowded teeth, we evaluate if they are good candidate for Invisalign. We are experts in the performance of Invisalign for crooked teeth. For patients with more severe crooked teeth, we will refer them out to our trusted network of orthodontists.
For patients with chipped or nicked teeth, we are usually able to restore the appearance of the tooth with a dental bonding using porcelain or resin.
Some patients come to us with complaint of sleep apnea, snoring and generalized difficulty breathing at night. We thoroughly examine these patients to determine if they are candidates for palatal expansion procedures. Our doctors have undergone extensive training in the new and currently evolving study of airway orthodontics.
Another common complaint of patients is infections of the mouth, teeth, gums or bone. With the help of a clinical examination and x-rays, we identify the source and the extent of the infection. As with any infection, the goal is to control the infection, remove the bacteria first, and then restore the normal anatomy. Depending on the severity of the infection, this may involve antibiotic treatment alone, or more invasive procedures to remove and drain the infection.
When parents bring their children in for evaluation for grooves within the molars and premolars, we often recommend performing dental sealants to prevent cavities, and allow children to have improved oral health for life.
Although not exactly general dentistry, many patients come to us with complaints of unwanted cosmetic issues. Our cosmetic dentistry ranges from teeth whitening to smile makeovers and everything in between. Please see our additional pages on cosmetic dentistry.
